Heart Disease and The Great Cholesterol Hoax

Anyone with an open mind will soon discover that the emperor is naked. But the sad conclusion is that many editors of medical journals have little interest in the pursuit in this debate. Besides, the inaccuracies, the misinterpretations, the exaggerations, and the misleading quotations, not to mention the fraudulent manipulations of the data in this research area which are so numerous that it is the consumer of today must look outside the box to find the real truth about this controversy.

Much has happened since drastic changes in laboratory diagnostic values occurred in 1999-2000. Many more studies have appeared that contradict the current views. What is particularly interesting and surprising is that a steadily increasing number of studies have found that high cholesterol is beneficial, probably because it protects against cancer and infectious diseases. The anti-infectious effect of cholesterol is particularly challenging because a host of observation have documented a strong link between infections and cardiovascular diseases. Today at least a hundred scientific reviews on this subject have been published, but hitherto no one has been able to explain how the infections interact with the processes that lead to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The main obstacle is most likely that for almost half a century we have been effectively brainwashed to believe that cholesterol is the bad guy. How can high cholesterol be bad and at the same time protecting us against factors that are harmful to our vessels?

The cholesterol campaign has done immense harm; just to mention the epidemic of obesity and diabetes, the most serious health problems in the Western world today. Another problem is the widespread medicalization of mankind. Today millions of healthy people are converted to patients taking cholesterol lowering drugs, and if the official guidelines should be followed consequently in the future, most adult people and even many children should take them for the rest of their lives.

But only a very small minority gain benefit from these drugs. Worse is that their side effects, many of which are seriously debilitating and even fatal, are grossly underreported. There are countless tens of thousands of cases of secondary side effects of lousy memory, weak muscles, sexual dysfunction, bad tempers and most distressing of all heart failure just to name a few. As a matter of fact heart failure is now climbing in staticists due to the increased prescriptions of statin drugs being administered. Isn’t it funny that the medication that is supposed to reduce heart disease actually precipitates it?

…that your body produces three to four times more cholesterol than what you eat?
…that the production increases when you eat only small amounts of cholesterol and decreases when you eat large amounts?

…that stroke patients have eaten less?
…that people with low cholesterol become just as atherosclerotic as people with high?
…that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for women?
…that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for people above the age of 65 although by far most heart attacks occur after that age?
…that the effect on cholesterol of the low fat diet is trivial at most?
…that most of the cholesterol lowering drugs are dangerous to your health and may (will) shorten your life?
…that the new cholesterol lowering drugs, statins, do lower heart disease mortality, but this is because of effects other than cholesterol lowering? Unfortunately, they also may destroy your muscles and your mind, make you impotent and produce cancer.
…that most of these facts have been presented in scientific journals and books for decades but the proponents of the diet heart hypothesis never tell them to the public?
…that the cholesterol campaign creates immense prosperity for researchers, doctors, medical journals, drug producers and the food industry?

I guess that your answers to these questions is a no, and you are not alone. According to a Gallup poll in the USA taken many years ago, half of all Americans worried about fat and cholesterol and most of them had guilt feelings when they ate food they liked.

Apart from the fact that worrying about your health is bad for your heart, all this stress and anxiety is unnecessary. The cholesterol campaign is medical quackery of the first order. In fact, the eminent American physician and scientist George Mann called it “the greatest scientific deception of this century, perhaps of any century.”
