Multiple Sclerosis

PREVENTION OF MUTIPLE SCLEROSIS WITH NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTATION

By Dr. Michael John Badanek, BS, DC, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, CTTP, MSGR/CHEV

A new study indicates that a high intake of vitamin D may prevent MS, the crippler of young adults.

Modern science has concluded that this terrible disease is the result of the body’s immune system attacking its own nervous system. In this study scientists found that people having the highest vitamin D levels had the lowest incidence of MS.

It is known that vitamin D regulates the immune system (called immunomodulation) and tends to cool down the overactive immune reactions seen in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Similar studies have shown low vitamin D levels in people having other autoimmune diseases such as immune thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus and Crohn’s disease. Vitamin D with sunshine promotes the release of Nitric Oxide (NO). Nitric Oxide production and release helps the brain with increasing blood rich with nutrients to promote a normal/healthy brain function.

Epidemiologists have noted that diseases such as MS are more common in northern latitudes than southern and have hypothesized a relation to sun exposure. Most of the vitamin D we require is generated when our skin is exposed to the sun. With the widespread use of sunscreens and sun avoidance, vitamin D deficiency has become more common. It should be noted that the average American needs 8,000-10,000 I.U. of vitamin D/3 a day in order to maintain relatively moderate levels of 50-60 dl/ml. Make sure vitamin K2 is taken with D/3 in a 1:10 ratio to prevent calcium mobilization from bone to tissue. Vitamin D/3 actually inhibits K/2 so it is essential to take the two in secession.

Recommended levels of supplemental vitamin D have recently been shown to be far too low at 200 to 400 IU a day. A recent review appearing in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that safety concerns with vitamin D toxicity are grossly exaggerated and that the daily dose should be 2,000 IU a day. It also should be noted that vitamin D has been found to reduce the risk of several cancers as well as diabetes.

Dr. Badanek’s office looks at sickness and disease at a totally different perspective. We address the cause of all conditions, test for them, and treat the cause not just the symptoms. It is a totally new paradigm shift of conscientiousness for the new patient. To input knowledge to the patient, which is most lacking today in our health care delivery system, is empowering the patient to be successful with their health care challenges presented.

Please schedule an appointment to consult with your health challenges. We offer a courtesy consultation for your first visit to meet Dr. Badanek. Dr. Badanek has been in private clinical practice for 34 years working in the field of Integrative/Functional Medicine.
